about

Malcolm was born in Gloucestershire, England. He studied Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton from 1990- 93, where he specialised in sculpture. From there he moved to London for an MA in Site- Specific sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art, 1993-95.

Initially my practice as a sculptor drew upon my birthplace in the Cotswolds and echoed the agricultural and mechanical forms that were commonplace for me. This is particularly evident in my sculptures in wood and stone, carved from a single block with no joins. I still refer to this influence, but more recent works have also included functional steel parts, as seen in Chironomus, Plough, Quarta and the Costola series.

In recent years I have developed a more architectural style, which has also led to a change in scale evidenced in works of the Tenement series. Since moving to Italy in 2018, I have continued with this approach as seen in the sculptures La Posta, Nuvoloso and the commission Presente, made for a private client in England.

Two other significant developments have taken place following my move to Italy. I expanded my practice into the field of installation with the work Ancore in 2020 and La Pesa delle Anime, 2021 and during 2023 I began working with Bianco Cave s.r.l , based in Melpignano, Puglia translating ideas from my sculptural practice into the field of design, which were first shown at the Salone del Mobile, Milan in 2024.

As well as working in the field of sculpture I have also produced a major body of work in print, in particular lithography on stone, working in the studio of master printmaker, Simon Burder at Oaks Editions Studio, England. Not restricting myself to lithography I have produced prints using the techniques of linocut and woodblock and in 2023 I began to explore the etching process working with Corrado Albicocco at Stamperia D'Arte Albicocco, Udine. My prints have been widely exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and also in Egypt, China, Bulgaria, France, Spain, Sweden and Italy.

Having first exhibited with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 2007 Malcolm was elected as an Associate member in 2009 and gained Full membership in 2011, remaining as part of the Society until 2018.

From 2010-14 I was a Trustee of the Free Painters and Sculptors Society-

In 2016 I was elected as a Member of Royal Society of Sculptors.
